Alpaca Silk DK

Debbie Bliss
Alpaca Silk DK
80% baby alpaca/20% silk

hand wash cold, gentle/dry flat
DK weight, 22st/4" on US size 6
50g, 114yds

sample color: raspberry

This yarn looks thicker than I would normally associate with DK weight, but it is so light and airy it knits down to a small gauge. I used size 4s and yet I got only 19 st/4" rather than the suggested 22.

The yarn is very pleasant to knit with. I personally had no problem with splitting, however it is possible. I don't recall that it seemed to want to unwind itself, and held together at least the first time through: One commenter on Ravelry basically said no problem with first knitting, but when frogged and knit again, "it started splitting like crazy."

Other comments included ... don't machine wash unless you want to felt this (apparently somewhere machine washing was suggested)... "delicate and light in weight" ... "you might want to consider knitting cables with it because of its lack of memory--cables can help stabilize it."

Swatch: Longtail cast on, 26 st.
k,p repeat, three rows, then stockinette:

With size 4 needles:

5-1/4"(W) x 2-1/4"(H)
10rows/1.5" --> 26.5rows/4"

Stitches are pretty loose at this gauge.

Soaked in cold water and a little dish soap; no dye run. Rolled in a towel and then patted out to dry. I find it interesting that hairy yarns look even hairier when they are wet. I used pins to hold down the bind off row, which wanted to roll in.

I don't know why this swatch didn't change size, I was rather expecting it. It is so soooft... silky. The stockinette has evened out rather nicely, and there is a gentle halo.

It looks pretty nice here and in person, but I don't think I would recommend knitting at this looser gauge--this swatch was all drape and no body. I would be afraid that it would stretch out of shape very easily.
