Cotton Stria

2009.08.11
Manos del Uruguay
Cotton Stria
100% cotton

hand wash/dry flat
worsted weight, 18-20st/4" on US size 4-6
50g, 116yds

sample color: bubble gum

Here we go--love these clear, pretty colors--kind of like a crayon box. There is a very subtle striping effect evident in the swatch.

Remember--I knit loosely. I started out with some 5s, and the swatch was coming up 17st/4". I decided things were just too sloppy to go on, so I restarted on 4s, which helped a bit, but not as much as I would have hoped. I wondered at the suggested gauge of this yarn as I was coming very close to the lower number at that point.

I had no problem with splitting. The yarn had little give or stretch, but it was not uncomfortable for me. The nonslippery rickrack action grabs hold of the needles and could cause tight knitters a little trouble.

Comments on Ravelry included verbiage along the lines of: Soft! lovely texture... wears well (or doesn't) ... stitches a struggle to make ... yarn stretches ... leaves fuzz ... [and, most annoying:] several knots in skeins.

I did not notice fuzz, myself, nor that this yarn stretches. But, maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention.

Swatch: Longtail cast on, 24 st.
k,p repeat, two rows, then stockinette:

Cotton Stria preblockPreblock-->
With size 4 needles:

5-1/8"(W) x 2-3/8"(H)
18.5st/4"
14rows/2" --> 28rows/4"

Kind of a mess--I felt that this (preblocked) gauge was too loose and questionable in my book. There was more spaciness around columns of stitches than is indicated by this rather sorry, blurry photo. Rows were harder to count than stitches due to the unevenness.

Soak:
Soaked in cold water and a little dish soap; no dye run. Rolled in a towel and then patted out to dry. The stitches flattened a bit. I avoided using pins.

Cotton Stria postblock

<--After Block:
5-1/8"(W) x 2-1/4"(H)
18.5st/4"
14rows/2" --> 28rows/4"

Gee, almost no change in size. However--fortunately--the swatch consolidated quite a bit and the fabric no longer looks loose and untidy. It is a much more attractive and cohesive fabric now. It is very soft and pretty, but it looks kind of chunky for a worsted at this gauge. Maybe 20st/4" would tame it even more.
